A few of you know that I make my living in publishing. I'll admit though, I am a hack writer. I get paid to write crap I don't believe, but that is only for professional articles that I write and edit for my employer. My personal works are not compromised. Those are true to my feelings. I like to believe that my ideas will occasionally make people smile or laugh, but I prefer to think that the words I put down, above all else, will make people think. Sometimes though, people get offended, and that's okay too. At least I know people are reading!

I am fortunate enough to live in a society where freedom of expression, of speech and the press are our rights. I know that we are not the only country in the world that has these rights, but in the case of France, it is special. The French supported our country in it's infancy. Not much later we inspired them in their revolution as well, so as much crap as we give each other (C'mon, you know you've made plenty of 'surrender monkey' jokes) we share common roots.

In support of free speech and press, today, go read something that has been deemed offensive. Go read books that have been banned. Go open your mind to new thoughts and points of view.

People have a tendency to forget the important allegiance we have enjoyed with France.

They also forget they also have a Statue of Liberty (which was given to us by the French! )

I hope the American people can do everything they can to support France at this time.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

P.S. The American Statue of Liberty is in NEW JERSEY not New York. Tough shit New Yorkers

I think that is one of the things that scares most of the normal folks western world regarding the radicals out there. Their total lack of a sense of humor and a willingness to destroy the things that make the world beautiful and fun. Be that art, music or the right to chuckle at a cartoon. Little things go a long way. I'm not even going to get into slavery or a total lack of respect for half the world's population. That is just barbarianism.

And if the French didn't hate the British so much we'd be having tea and crumpets instead of a coke and a big mac.

Yes, hmmm, we've had a special relationship with the French. In a strict sense, our nation is older than theirs, and they modeled their founding on ours.

They gave us Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, Pierre L'Enfant, new wave cinema, mimes.

We gave them blue jeans, Jerry Lewis, the largest amphibious assault ever undertaken by man.

However, the relationship falters at times. They gave us Kronenbourg 1664 and the latter films of Luc Besson. And we gave them tourists in Bermuda shorts and flip flops.

I prefer to watch The Fifth Element and think of the good times.

These people are trying to sow the seeds of hatred. If they can get Christians or Jews (or anybody) to hate Muslims for the simple fact of their being different then they have achieved their aims. As human beings of any creed, we must not take the bait. These people seek only to destroy, never create. You cannot reason with them. Only through steadfast belief and adherence to our humanity can we hope to outlast them. I do not believe they can be defeated by force of arms.

Intolerance takes many forms, but I maintain a hope for the greater part of humanity.

Kyle Reese said it pretty well, too:

Listen, and understand. That terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

I think it's quite egoistic to say, and I shouldn't even think about it, but it is weird feeling when something like this attack hits so close to home, in your home country. I wasn't a fan of Charlie Hebdo, didn't agree with what they were writing or the way they were doing it but like Voltaire once wrote (well not really, but it was what it meant) : "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend your right to say it".

I just hope we will come out of this tragic event better than we were before, and that politics won't use it to fuel their personnal agenda and the current climate that reigns in France and Europe against Muslims.

I like to think of the American-French relationship as that of a couple adult brothers who live in different states. Sure, we pick on each other constantly and get in wrestling matches when we drink too much at family reunions, but when some other asshole messes with one, he messes with both. When the shit gets rough, we always come help the other. As soon as the storm blows by, we go right back to calling each other pussies and trying to put the other bro in a headlock.

When we were in high-school we got into a pretty big fight where we didn't talk to eachother for a while and always messed up the other's bedroom when he wasn't home (the Quasi-War, for you history-challenged Jalops).

Later in life, France got picked-on by that dick down the street, Germany. Twice. Both times we teamed up and kicked his ass with our British cousins. And our kinda slow buddies Canada and Australia helped too. Oh, and some drunk lunatic Russian showed up and got some serious licks in too. Then we all pitched in and helped clean up the mess before we went back home. We never trusted that crazy Russian guy, though...

This one time, France was feeling a little sentimental and sent a us a gift, out of the blue. It was this big statue of some chick in a robe. Kinda weird, but it was a cool gesture so we put it in the front yard because we're 'Murica and we didn't have an El Camino to park out there yet.

Now, some jerk is messing with their shit, so we'll stand by them and help in any way we can. When it's all over, we'll hug and say "take it easy, dick" and go home because that's what brothers do.

Well, you told me to ask her for a threesome, but apparently she is a lesbian. She did however tried to explain, examplify and teach me a little galocher . And I got to watch her doing it with my gf. And I got to listen to their college stories. So yeah, I guess this answers your frat. boy question.

On the other hand, it was a nice cultural exchange, apparently she likes Brooklyn beer, NY cheesecake actually made in NY(Eileen's). And she made me try some of the crazy, fatty French winter food.

She was also surprised I watch Le Mans and that I'm not a huge fan of NASCAR, she thinks baseball is stupid and invited me to see Le Mans in France(but knowing my Job, I'm sure I won't be able to get vacation until August).

Balivernes!, French food is not fatty, it just happens to have all the right kind of stuff :)

AS for "galocher" we often say (well, mostly young people) "rouler une galoche" which is basically a regular french kiss, with a bit more tongue thrown in.

Eating different foods in different seasons is something that took me a little to understand. In America, we eat burgers both in the summer and in the winter. The only difference is the the quantity of ice from our big gulps, lol.

But seriously, now. Isn't galocher a one word verb? That can be used alone, instead of rouler une galoche, to say french kiss?

Kinja'd!!! BATC42 > El Relámpago(LZone) - Humanity First!

In "rouler une galoche", "galoche" is a noun, but you can use the verb "galocher" as a regular verb, like in "Ils se galochent" (They're french kissing).

As for found it's entirely true. We can it what we want year round, but it's kind of an unspoken tradition to eat certain founds only at specific times during the year, unless you're in the region from where it comes from.
That's why we motly eat raclette, fondue (especially a cheese, or fondue savoyarde) or tartiflette in the winter, while summer is more of a time to eat something light and "healthy" like a well furnished salad.

The food thing was a joke. We don't eat burgers all the time, everyday(except for Chris Christie, he washes his teeth with burgers and cookies).

Also I like fondue, I recently got something like that. So I could have have my cheddar cheese or chocolate and my gf could have her fancy Euro cheeses, in the same time.

I hear you got some nice beef accross the pond, you should try something we call "Fondue Bourguignonne". Boiling hot cooking oil in the fondue thingy, and cook the meat (cut in small cubes).

Well, it's good, but not as good as the beef from Japan or Argentina.

Also, isn't a better idea to keep the beef in a bit of' a mix of wine, dijon mustard and garlic paste, before dunking it into the oil?

I don't think it would be such a great idea, especially the wine (you know how hot oil can be when you pour other liquid on it), but it could be worth a try.
